Decreased Egg Reserve and New Treatment Approaches – Op. Dr. Ufuk Yılmaz

Decreased Egg Reserve and New Treatment Approaches

Decreased egg reserve, also known as diminished ovarian reserve, is a condition where the ovaries lose their normal reproductive potential and jeopardize fertility. This condition can be caused by illness or injury, but it mainly occurs as a result of advancing age. Decreased egg reserve is present in about 10-30% of patients who seek medical attention for infertility reasons.

FERTILITY DECREASES WITH ADVANCING AGE

As women age, their fertility potential declines through natural means. This is a universal phenomenon and can be observed even as early as around the age of 30. A small number of women may retain their normal fertility until their mid-40s.

FRAGILE X SYNDROME COULD BE THE CAUSE

One percent of the population experiences ovarian insufficiency (menopause) before the age of 40. This condition is known as early ovarian insufficiency or early menopause. Patients with decreased egg reserve should be screened for Fragile X Syndrome, which can lead to early ovarian insufficiency. Fragile X Syndrome is also one of the most common causes of inherited intellectual disabilities and autism.
